Art historian with the scientific approach to the expertise of the graphics
Unlike connoisseurship- where the final verdict depends on a specialist’s unverifiable opinion-scientific expertise is based on a technological analysis and the comparative method. The examined artwork is collated with verified works by the same artist using two main characteristic analysis: stylistic and technological.

About
This stage begins with examining the work in the context of the period of time when it was created, precisely the author’s biographical circumstances and creative ambitions. It implements visual comparison with the museum-quality references. The validity of this stage conclusions directly depends on the quality of the reference data base: only by concentrating on museum collections, special archives and art foundations materials verifiable result can be achieved.
Stylistic Analysis
Technological Analysis
This stage of examination is conducted using laboratory equipment, but the process varies depending on the medium: for graphical works, it includes microscopic examination and analysis under ultraviolet and infrared light, for cavas, additional methods are used: X-ray and micro-chemical analysis of all the layers of materials. The results of each test are compared with corresponding data from reference works known to be authentic.

Services
To determine the authenticity or find the author of a piece of art, as well as its period of creation, stylistic and artistic value, cultural or historical significance.
Expertise and Attribution
If the collection includes 20−30 works, it is good timing to start maintaining an inventory. Once the collection exceeds 100 pieces, a catalogue becomes essential for effective documentation, tracking, and long-term management.
Collection management
The expert’s primary goal is to minimize client risks in the purchase or sale of artworks by providing objective, qualified outlook and guidance.
Consulting on documentation, evaluation and conservation
Essential for students, beginning collectors, art dealers and managers, or even exhibition curators, these sessions provide insight into the principles of expertise, collecting strategies, and market navigation.
Education
Upon a positive result, a formal expert opinion report is issued. This document complies with the national standard of art expertise for paintings and graphic works in the Russian Federation.
*Specializing exclusively in graphic works of art
Both technological and stylistic patterns are analyzed to verify whether the piece can be confidently attributed to the artist. The version of the artist’s name can be based on a signature or a claim made by the owner. This process also aims to identify the period of time when the particular object was created and place of the work in the artist’s retrospective.
• Expertise of the work of art is a process aimed to prove authenticity and determine the artistic, cultural, and historical value of a work
• Attribution is a much more complex process that involves identifying a probable author and testing that hypothesis through further expert examination
Any attribution begins by questioning: Who could have created this work, and when? While it remains a rare case proving authorship definitively without a signature, owner’s version or documented provenance, the process involves testing multiple hypotheses regarding potential artists. If after all an author cannot be defined, the expert may still issue a document regarding the date of creation, quality or attribution to a particular art tradition.

Properly written descriptions and systematic organization allow more efficient collection management: enabling acquisition, rotation, and the articulation of the collection’s core themes—which in turn enhances its overall value.
Support and cataloging
Building a collection with investment potential—or even one intended simply as an interior design —requires deep personal knowledge and engagement within the field. Years of professional experience allow the expert to provide quick support: evaluating existing works, identifying the primary vector of the collection, facilitating rotation or finding new objects to add based on current art market.

• Consulting on required or existing documents for the purposes of purchase, sale or inheritance of artworks
• Examination of the current state of preservation of both paintings and graphic objects, recommendations for conservation or restoration
• Consulting on the market estimate of a specific artwork.
Many art owners find the antique and fine art market difficult to navigate. Prices fluctuate, and sales data is often accessible only to professionals. The process of buying, selling, or managing inherited works can be confusing.
An independent expert view helps clarify the situation, save time and resources, and choose the most effective strategy for documentation, sale, or collaboration with other market participants.

Minimum lecture duration: 90 minutes Audience size:
  • 1 to 10 participants (private or group format)
  • 10 to 100 participants (hosted by event organizer)
For students, beginning collectors and exhibition curators, a lecture on the principles of art expertise and the mechanisms of the antique art market can offer valuable insight. These lectures are regularly held in closed sessions hosted by RMA and Masters School, as well as within the academic programs of leading institutions such as Lomonosov Moscow State University (MSU), Higher School of Economics (HSE), Russian State University for the Humanities (RSUH), among others.
• Lectures and workshops
For broader audiences, lectures may focus on general art history, particular artists, specific art movements, or historical periods.
Many people seek to structure their knowledge of art, or simply understand the basics: Why visit a museum? How should one look at paintings? Why some artists are famous and others forgotten? And the most frequently asked question to art historian is, "What's so special about Malevich’s Black Square?". Questions like these can be explored in the format of individual or group lectures, workshops, art brunches, or informal gatherings for art enthusiasts.
